   Singular                  Plural             In the past perfect tense  the subject is singular or plural form of

 I  had taken         We had taken         to have, had is used and third form of verb past participle is used.

You had taken      You had taken

He had taken        They had taken 

She had taken

 It had taken
 

Rule:-Subject+had+Verb third form
Eg: He had come
 

Uses of past perfect tense
 

a) To denote an action completed before a certain moment in the past.
Eg: 1) He had given me a promise.     2) we had taken his permission.
 

b) To denote an action which had been completed before another action was begun.
Eg: 1) I had completed my work before the bell rang. 2) It started raining after we had reached home.
